Located in the center of Hessisch Oldendorf, the Ritterhof with its remarkable manor house in the Weser Renaissance style is one of the largest town castles of the Schaumburg nobility.
At one time, the Weser also flowed directly past the estate's fields - until a farmer threw a horse's head into the Weser, thus changing the course of the river to protect his land from the recurring floods. Much to the displeasure of the people of Hessisch Oldendorf.
In the end, the loss of the direct connection to the most important transport route at the time had fatal economic consequences. It's no wonder that the ghost of the farmer still wanders around on foggy nights because of his sacrilege.
