Stift Fischbeck

Fischbeck Abbey is a magnificent example of medieval monastic tradition with its unaltered Romanesque architecture and the unity of its complex with cloister. Founded in 955 by the noblewoman Helmburgis, it was a convent for ladies of the nobility. They brought their dowry in the form of money, but also roads and mill rights, thus securing the existence of the monastery. This is particularly evident in the rich decoration of the collegiate church and the famous Fischbeck tapestry from 1583. Up to 24 women lived in the convent until the Reformation, after which it was converted into a Protestant ladies' convent. Until the beginning of the 20th century, only ladies who could prove that they had at least 16 noble ancestors could move into the convent.

The fact that the history and tradition of the place is still kept alive today is thanks to the ladies who still live in the convent. Well versed in the rich history, they can captivate every visitor with anecdotes and stories. Unlike at the time of its foundation, the abbey now sees itself as a place of encounter and not only regularly invites visitors to abbey talks and organ concerts, but also offers a vacation apartment for anyone interested.
