Destroyed several times by fire, it has survived wars, reformation and desecration. After the Napoleonic Wars, the monastery church was even used as a straw barn. Today, Möllenbeck Abbey is considered a unique medieval monument. Möllenbeck is one of the oldest abbeys in the Weser Valley. However, only the Ottonian round towers and the crypt remain from this period. Between 1478 and 1505, the remaining buildings, church, cloister and the cloister building were rebuilt. The use of the complex has also varied over the centuries, ranging from a monastery to a secular canonry with a Latin school and a state domain.
Today, Möllenbeck Monastery is considered one of the best-preserved late medieval monastery complexes in Germany. Its harmonious architecture and roof made of Solling slabs are widely praised. Once a year, a very special music event takes place within its venerable walls: The Irish Folk Festival at Möllenbeck Monastery.
The 1100-year-old monastery is also the "destination point" of the Loccum-Volkenroda pilgrimage route. With the adjoining domain, which is still a farm today, it is an open house for all pilgrims and interested parties and is used as such in a variety of ways. A café and beer garden in the courtyard invite you to take a break. To the left of the Weser, the trail leads via Exten, Hohenrode, Heßlingen and Fuhlen with their small old churches and chapels back to the main trail to Hessisch Oldendorf and on to Fischbeck Abbey.
Further information about the monastery and the Möllenbeck estate can be found here.
